How to Set Up Life in KL: A First 30 Days Guide
KL is one of the more manageable cities to set up in — here's a week-by-week guide to your first 30 days.

Day 1–3: The Immediate Essentials
- SIM card at KLIA arrivals — Maxis or Celcom. RM 30–50 for 20–30GB data
- Cash from Maybank or CIMB ATMs — initial float of RM 300–500
- Grab — download and set up immediately. Your primary transport
- Touch 'n Go eWallet — Malaysia's dominant digital payment. Transit, retail, food stalls
Week 1: Getting Oriented
- Explore your neighbourhood on foot — find coffee shop, pharmacy, food stall
- Bank account: HSBC and Citibank easiest for expats; Maybank and CIMB for local banking
- Register with your embassy
- Locate nearest GP clinic
Week 2: Healthcare and Admin
- Register with a private GP clinic — walk-in friendly, English-speaking
- If children: arrange school registration and medical check-ups required
- Confirm health insurance covers Malaysian private hospitals
- Employment Pass endorsement at Immigration Department if required
Week 3: Building Routine
- Identify your regular grocery shop — Village Grocer, Jaya Grocer, or Cold Storage
- Find a gym — most RGP Homes buildings have facilities
- Join Internations KL for community events and connections
Week 4: Longer-Term Planning
- Evaluate whether to extend your mid-term rental or begin long-term housing search
- School events — parent meet-and-greets, WhatsApp groups
- Car decision: purchase vs Grab-only vs long-term rental
The first 30 days in KL moves faster than expected. Having the right housing base — a fully equipped apartment where you can decompress and work — makes everything else more manageable.
